Outlook 2007 UTF-8 bug

Filed under: Outlook — pal @ 8:36 am

I was finally able to solve the problem with new Outlook 2007 - new emails in plain text in UTF-8 format were not displayed.

The solution was simple - just had to create a new data file, and then import all information from old data file (.pst) to a new one. That’s it - all works fine for new emails.

Hint for users who are going to do that - don’t forget to save your processing rules first :-)

Colibri vs Launchy

Filed under: Productivity, Useful, Computers — pal @ 11:03 am

Dropped the lovely Colibri and switched to a faster, more flexible and powerful analog - Launchy. It is free opensource program, couldn’t notice any bugs during few days of testing. Indexation of all my shortcuts + extra programs takes now 1-2 secs instead of 30-40 in case of Colibri. A proper configuration and skins support allow me to say Colibri has no advantages over Launchy.

Trackball vs Mouse

Filed under: Computers — pal @ 2:05 am

This is not a holy war because nobody likes (except me) and they are very unpopular, but anyway I think is better. The one I have is Logitech® Cordless TrackMan® Wheel, previously owned the same thing but wired, not cordless, for 2 years. I am talking about thumb-driven trackball, as I do not understand how can anyone use a trackball that needs several fingers or hands just to rotate the ball - in everyday life.

Logitech Trackball Trackman

Why is this ugly piece of plastics better than a mouse (for me) - simple, it has too many advantages against mice:

  1. It’s stationary - you don’t have to move it. Your arms rest (only your fingers move), absolutely health-friendly
  2. It’s stationary - you don’t need place for it, you can work everywhere, no problems with surfaces - I can even work on my leg - not talking about laptop
  3. It is more reliable as you do not have to move it. Unlike fragile mouse, this is like a solid rock

It is same precise as a , can be cordless too.
The only disadvantage for me is that you have to work with clean washed hands only, otherwise you have to clean it twice a day - anyway cleaning is very easy and takes 10 secs only, maybe it is not a drawback at all ;-)

About usability and ability to actually use it comfortly for everyday life as a replacement over a mouse - yes it is possible. You have to get used to it, and this period takes around 2 months after you can act same quickly as with a mouse.. But I think worth it.

Firefox Toolbar Drag Folders

Filed under: JFYI — pal @ 12:06 pm

A very unobvious feature for me, but I actually found it. The best browser ever ( of course - homepage) has a nice feature of which is very useful for quick access to bookmarks.. You can easily manage links dragging pages onto toolbar, you can create folders (pop-down menus) and drag links within them. The problem was - I wasn’t able to of bookmarks with my mouse.. But it appeared to be very easy after reading documentation. You can drag folders pressing Shift or Alt when dragging, that’s it.

JFYI.

Outlook: Internal editor vs MS Word

Filed under: Productivity, Computers — pal @ 10:24 am

Just a thought, what should be used when working with emails with MS ? Built-in editor or Office ? What’s better? What should be preferred by default? Let’s see what’s the difference.

  • Word has bigger possibilities in decorating email (HTML mode).. However I don’t use anything other than fonts colorizing and formatting. Internal editor is ok too.
  • Word is much slower! I have a pretty powerful laptop, but when you have a large email database, Word is slower in everything - not only when replying, but even when creating a new message
  • Internal editor is easier to use
  • Word has better management for signatures, but it has bugs and doesn’t always work as supposed.

Enough for getting rid of Word as , but I’m using internal one and more than happy. Can’t even think about why use Word unless you are HTML-only guy who loves fancy emails..

Colibri

Filed under: Productivity, Useful, Computers — pal @ 10:11 am

I found the I am using more than a week and I’m very happy with it. No cheap ads, it is really useful. It’s name is Colibri.

Launching programs is not a big deal, but usually takes several mouseclicks and several priceless seconds (I often forget what application I want to start during that).. I’m was launching programs with:

  1. Start Menu (4 rows of programs)
  2. On-boot autostart
  3. Quick-start panel (enhanced by TrueLaunchBar)
  4. Desktop shortcuts

Huge list. There was no alternative to this mess until appeared. It is type-ahead .. So you press a hot key (Ctrl-Space by default), and then type the first letters of you application (like Fi for Firefox or Ou for Outlook), it offers choices and you can either expand it into actions by Tab or launch it with Enter. Seems pretty complicated but in real life that rocks.. Get rid of all shortcuts, and just press hot key and type first letters (Colibri gets smarter for “hot” applications - they are offered more often) and Enter. Takes a second - and the most important it doesn’t confuse your mind when offering a choice of all applications (like in Start Menu).

Must-have software. It’s free additionally. Recommended.

Following Up with Outlook

Filed under: Productivity, Useful, Computers — pal @ 11:51 am

Following up with is a vital problem, if you sent a email and didn’t get a reply, sometimes you want to send a ‘‘ to about your previous email. There is no similar tracking feature for this in Outlook, bu there are a few utilities that help managing reminders.

You can find a good and thorough comparison of 3 most popular follow-up tools for outlook - MAPILab’s E-mail Follow Up, Sperry Software’s Follow Up Reminder and NetCentric’s Getting Things Done Outlook Add-in here.

Outlook addin is the most powerful but the most expensive. However, I will still be looking for other solutions for and increasing productivity for you work with email and Outlook.

Referer vs Referrer

Filed under: Other, Useless — pal @ 6:34 am

Maybe I’m the only one who had this problem, I was using both words for same meaning.

So the correct one is referrer. Referer is something mentioned and used by HTTP specification.

Both are popular though.

JFYI.

FireFox 1.5 released

Filed under: Computers — pal @ 12:59 pm

I didn’t expect this version of my favourite browser so much as previous version, current 1.0.7 version is pretty comfortable to work with - fast, secure, stable. I will try 1.5 separately, and will probably switch only when it gets all necessary extensions I currently use. But looks like new 1.5 version is very good to get acquainted with this , try it if you haven’t already.

ZOE

Filed under: Productivity, Useful — pal @ 2:28 pm

It’s not a secret gmail is very popular not only because they offer a lot of space, it’s also very fast, simple and flexible, and it indexes everything in it’s own style. It really rocks when you have a lot of email correspondence like me and have to archives often.
(actually it’s ZOË) is a tool that offers same indexation of all your mail - but locally on your computer. It’s actually a email client, but it also acts like a simple or server, means you can easily use your favourite email client like easily with it.

ZOE

It’s so flexible - wow, you can even read your mail accessing by FTP client, web client, imap, pop3 - any way you can imagine it. It’s also pretty quick, you can find details on it’s official site.

It is more flexible solution than Neo Pro, it only works with Outlook with it’s base, while ZOE is much more powerful, it’s like a server on your computer. Please don’t hesitate trying it.

ForceBindIP

Filed under: Useful — pal @ 1:25 pm

Wow I finally found this amazing software.. I spent months looking for something like that, but no luck. But suddenly I faced this tiny (~36kb with installer) program and tried it.

It is only useful for people who have several and have to deal with all the time. I use WiFi and LAN, I use virtual network interfaces (VPN) and always wanted to make some programs work with one interface, some programs work with different one. Like - browsing with one, downloading with second, ICQ with different and all at the same time. Windows routing abilities (route program) helps but it is a pain to keep updated.

ForceBindIP does exactly it has to, you can use it to launch using particular netword interface. It is fast, small, free and it works, really great who has to handle multiple NICs.

  2. Computer Productivity is almost all about making work with MS , Windows and Desktop easy and flexible. Promise to keep it interesting
  3. Some minor “other” stuff, only interesting stuff I want to pay special attention
  4. No porn, no “funny” images and no google ads :-)

Comments are welcome, I’ll be happy if someone finds anything useful on this site. Tnx.

Neo Pro Free - awesome outlook indexer

Filed under: Other, Productivity — pal @ 4:27 pm

I finally was able to find a free, fast, amazingly quick, powerful email for - that’s definitely my software of this month.

It’s name is Neo Pro

Many features for Neo

What’s so amazing in it and why does anyone need this type of software. It is very useful only if you are using outlook and you have a large email database with 10000’s of emails and 100’s of correspondents as I do, and you want to search them and organize them easily. I was previously using a small tool called (LookOut for OutLook) but it was too slow and it didn’t work correctly in some cases.

Neo Pro is pretty costly (~$70), but Free version is also powerful. Its actually main feature is indexing all emails and contacts in , it sorts email, filteres it, and you can search it.

There are many other features you may want to be interested in, like hot folders, advanced categories, active mails and to-dos, saved searches and so on, but I leave it for your personal research ;-) But I ensure you will get excited with any feature you might want to try!
For example filters work like this
